Couple of my favorites
On the trucks of a Plumbing Company:
“Don’t sleep with a drip. Call us.”
In a Nonsmoking Area:
“If we see smoke, we will assume you are on fire and put you out.”

Margaret Atwood
I am currently reading “Curious Pursuits” by Margaret Atwood.
It is a collection of various pieces that she has written over a number of years. It includes reviews of various books by her. It also gives a glimpse into who inspired her (TS Eliot, Orwell etc) during her graduation years. It also shows her interest in feminist issues. There are also essays on what made her write “Handmaid’s Tale” and “Oryx and Crake”. These are not science fiction but speculative fiction based on the various books that she has read over the years.
Borat and Leno
It was strange seeing one comedian being uncomfortable around another comedian.
If one had seen the episode of Jay Leno where he interviewed Borat, one could see that Leno was visibly uncomfortable and wasn’t sure how to handle him. The trademark gesture of Leno where he touches his guest’s shoulder (to show that he didn’t mean any harm by his remarks) before break-time was also not there!
Miami Blues
Saw Miami Blues starring Alec Baldwin and Fred Ward. Two words for this – Crap movie. It is too far removed from my reality and maybe the director and the whole team could have devoted their time and energy in making a better and different movie.
A time warp was seeing Alec Baldwin in ‘Will and Grace’ the same night – a gap of 15 years between the movie and the TV serial.
Jonathan Buckley
Read ‘Invisible’ by Jonathan Buckley over the weekend. The background is one of those old hotels in the English countryside that is about to shut down.
There is a blind translator, Edward Morton, who has to make a major decision in his life – whether he should stay in his comfort zone i.e. London or move to Italy where his girlfriend has found a job.
There is also the hotel manager Malcolm Caldecott, whose daughter Stephanie gets in touch with him after a period of eight years (or so). Their relationship moves from a no-man’s land to one where they are comfortable with one another.
There is Eloni Dobra the chambermaid who is escaping from a gang in London and who is missing her homeland but doesn’t want to go back there.
The book moves slowly but lyrically towards an ending where relationships find a new beginning and life moves on.
Iris Johansen
Read ‘On the Run’ by Iris Johansen. This was the first book of hers that I read.
A book that can be read at one go and was quite pacy. Although the plot was a bit too convoluted to believe. The villain will wait 8 years to get back at somebody and to get a pair of horses under control is a bit hard to believe.
But it’s not bad a for a lazy after noon when one wants something brainless to read!
The Party
Saw The Party *ing Peter Sellers. He plays the role of Hrundi Bakshi, a struggling Indian actor in Hollywood who gets invited to a party and the havoc that is caused there. We have soapsuds covering the whole house and a cute baby elephant rampaging thru the house. The elephant has ‘The world is flat’ painted on it along with ‘love is cube root’. That was like strange after having recently read Thomas Friedman’s book. Sellers also drives a nice car that – 2 wheels in front and 1 at back
